automysqlbackup error fix

You get this:
mysqldump: Got error: 1142: SELECT,LOCK TABL command denied to user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' for table 'cond_instances' when using LOCK TABLES

to fix it:
edit /etc/default/automysqlbackup
change the DNAMES line to this:

DBNAMES=`mysql --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/debian.cnf --execute="SHOW DATABASES" | awk '{print $1}' | grep -v ^Database$ | grep -v ^mysql$ | grep -v ^performance_schema$ | tr \\\r\\\n ,\ `
or, to be succinct: add
 | grep -v ^performance_schema$
into the list. If you're doing any different method of DBNAMES, just make sure to exclude performance_schema.

Why is this happening?
automysqlbackup's default configuration attempts to lock tables before dumping. This error isn't specifically automysqlbackup's problem to fix, as much as it's a problem (or not) that performance_schema.cond_instances can't be locked [by debian-sys-maint] at the time of mysqldump, and mysqldump is what's throwing the error.

Is it a problem of backing up or not backing up performance_schema?
I can't answer that for your situation, though if you understand what the table does and how to recreate it you can be better informed about whether the backup is necessary to you. (hint: probably not unless corporately you need to keep all diagnostic logs on everything.) Also, this is not related to the other databases which actually hold your data and which you do want to back up.
 What does grep -v do?
It says, "don't include this in the list". Note, while you're here, that this also includes the "mysql" table. If you need to keep your users and permissions for disaster recovery reasons, you may wish to consider not excluding that table.
What is "Database"? Why is that grep -v? I don't have a database called Database.
Database is the column title of the result of "SHOW DATABASES" SQL query.

Ubuntu Waiting for network message on bootup

Simple fix for this:
edit /etc/network/interfaces
make sure "auto" only points to network devices that actually will be and need to be on your network (for services) at boot time.

For instance, wlan0 may *not* be online before your OS loads.

Or, you might have other "auto" devices that obtain an ip address via DHCP. The failsafe allows sufficient time to get a DHCP address. You may decide whether you want to disable the failsafe or disable the auto, but note that some services depend on at least eth0 being "alive" before they start (or your ethn configured device).

Since you're there, it's a good idea to check for legacy network devices you may have configured in the past and make sure they're not "auto".

(If you're using DHCP and this configuration does not work for you, it's an issue with DHCP.)

Windows update error 80070005 quick resolution

If you've been infected by malware that "hides everything", don't forget to unhide the folders under c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\
open an administrative level command prompt and type this:
cd \windows\SoftwareDistribution
attrib -r -s -h /s /d *.*

if you want to open the firehose (somewhat) safely, you might try this from c:\windows:
attrib -r -h /s /d *.*

You won't be able to unhide system files, but you will unhide everything that you otherwise have access to.

(Be very certain you're in the SoftwareDistribution folder prior to runnning the attrib command line, otherwise you just unhid/unreadonly/unsystem the entire folder you're in.)

This should quickly fix the WindowsUpdate_80070005 error and allow you to download Windows Updates as well as Microsoft Security Essentials updates if you're encountering 0x80070005 error.

There's no warranty about whether you try this stuff. It may make things work, but you should at least consider whether you're comfortable with this.

Can't install Silverlight because it can't find installer

WARNING: Messing with registry entries can be dangerous. Anything you do with it is YOUR problem, not mine. Be sure to back up things before you delete things. I don't know if this will break things. All I know is that it allowed installation after it was removed.

1612 error for Silverlight 3.0

(you might want to remove the Silverlight 3.0 directory from Program Files first).

Go to regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\D7314F9862C648A4DB8BE2A5B47BE100]
(you might want to back up this registry entry before you continue)

delete this entry.
Now you can install 4.0 without error.

Silly, mindboggling obvious virtualbox/clonezilla error

Chalk this up to a bit of overthinking, or ... something.

See, I have this USB external 2TB hard drive, and on it, I have clonezilla images. Since that's ample size, I decided that I'd conserve space and make VirtualBox VDIs from the images and store them on the same drive... yes, if you're playing along, you'll understand what happened.

It appears that VirtualBox removes the Host mounted drive and attaches it to the guest image. All of a sudden, I can't do anything to the VB VDI /dev/sda because ... it doesn't exist anymore, because the usb 2TB drive is mounted to the guest, removing the .vdi.

(In case you didn't catch this: Let's say the 2TB drive is mounted on Windows as L:, and the drive for the virtual machine is in L:\drive.vdi When VirtualBox runs, L: disappears as the 2TB drive is mounted for clonezilla recovery. Boom. L:\drive.vdi gone.)

Temp solution: put the .vdi on another drive until the images are converted, then move them back.

779 error installing KB957324

Repeated problems failing update of KB957324. Downloaded the Microsoft stand-alone installed, failed because: can't change or read c:\windows\system32\mapisvc.inf. Edited the permissions to take ownership of this file by the current admin logged in user. Retried. Successfully completed. Verified that SYSTEM still had full rights to the file. Happy camper.

AVG Update "General Error"

Recently, AVG caused a bit of a hassle with update. It wouldn't. The update indicated both Application updates and virus definition updates.

There's no real easy solution to this, but here's what worked for me:
Update from directory.

  1. Get the application update from http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-update (the first Windows link that indicates "All Necessary Modules") and remember where it is!
  2. Open AVG Anti-Virus console, Tools, Update from Directory
  3. Point it to the download folder from the first step. I told you to remember it! :)

You should now be able to successfully update AVG without having to reinstall.

Short short: RunOnce was removed in the registry as a key.

Updating smb SAMBA on Linux Ubuntu can't print

At a client's, I had a fresh install of Ubuntu and it could print to a network printer. I updated Ubuntu which included a new smbd install. Then I couldn't print. CUPS (http://localhost:631) told me that I have NT_STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL.

What?

OK, ping "computername" comes up an ip address on the Internet. Yuck.

It turns out that the name resolve order changed from LAN (lmhosts? netbios?) to Internet DNS (smb.conf entry was comment out, actually). Solutions: edit /etc/hosts to include the ip/name combination of the hosting computer. Or perhaps change the computername to computername.local

Outlook won't connect if no default gateway on NIC

Outlook won't connect to the Exchange server if you don't have a default gateway on your network card. Why would you have this problem? I didn't have a default gateway because I was temporarily using the PC as dual homed (two network cards). I wanted the default gateway to be set on one card and not the other. Then I repurposed the machine without checking and using the NIC that didn't have the gateway. Outlook balked, and I panicked a slight bit. How is it possible that I have every network (Internet, files, database, etc.) and no Exchange connectivity? Especially since my other box is chugging away perfectly on Exchange. Exchange error messages actually said this, and sure enough, it was correct.

ComboFix *not* currently down

You can google this, but essentially, it appears that a certain rootkit *might* cause combofix to delete all system files. You shouldn't use combofix.exe until it reappears on bleepingcomputer.com. Also, please don't attempt to host combofix.exe yourself.

I'm posting as a service because I've suggested using combofix in the past. I have no other association with sUBs or combofix or bleeping computer.

Updated 10/16/09 14:25:
There has been released a BETA that apparently doesn't do the bad things... I suggest following BleepinComputer for updated info.

Updated 12/28/09 18:05:
Apparently, combofix has been erm... fixed. Thanks for stopping by.
