Solve AutoMySQLBackup warning mysql.event

Fix for: -- Warning: Skipping the data of table mysql.event. Specify the --events option explicitly.

edit /usr/sbin/automysqlbackup (wherever your /etc/cron.daily/automysqlbackup points)
find the OPT="--quote-names" line (about line 354)

Change it to
OPT="--quote-names --events --ignore-table=mysql.event"

OR, (Based upon additional reading of responses):
one of:
OPT="--quote-names --events"

OPT="--quote-names --ignore-table=mysql.event"

The original line suppresses the warning and ignores the table (redundant).
If you wish to have the table in your backup, don't ignore the table, just use --events
If you don't care about the table, ignoring the table will also suppress the event message.

What's optimal? Depends on if you use events and require them to be restored.

automysqlbackup error fix

You get this:
mysqldump: Got error: 1142: SELECT,LOCK TABL command denied to user 'debian-sys-maint'@'localhost' for table 'cond_instances' when using LOCK TABLES

to fix it:
edit /etc/default/automysqlbackup
change the DNAMES line to this:

DBNAMES=`mysql --defaults-file=/etc/mysql/debian.cnf --execute="SHOW DATABASES" | awk '{print $1}' | grep -v ^Database$ | grep -v ^mysql$ | grep -v ^performance_schema$ | tr \\\r\\\n ,\ `
or, to be succinct: add
 | grep -v ^performance_schema$
into the list. If you're doing any different method of DBNAMES, just make sure to exclude performance_schema.

Why is this happening?
automysqlbackup's default configuration attempts to lock tables before dumping. This error isn't specifically automysqlbackup's problem to fix, as much as it's a problem (or not) that performance_schema.cond_instances can't be locked [by debian-sys-maint] at the time of mysqldump, and mysqldump is what's throwing the error.

Is it a problem of backing up or not backing up performance_schema?
I can't answer that for your situation, though if you understand what the table does and how to recreate it you can be better informed about whether the backup is necessary to you. (hint: probably not unless corporately you need to keep all diagnostic logs on everything.) Also, this is not related to the other databases which actually hold your data and which you do want to back up.
 What does grep -v do?
It says, "don't include this in the list". Note, while you're here, that this also includes the "mysql" table. If you need to keep your users and permissions for disaster recovery reasons, you may wish to consider not excluding that table.
What is "Database"? Why is that grep -v? I don't have a database called Database.
Database is the column title of the result of "SHOW DATABASES" SQL query.

Windows update error 80070005 quick resolution

If you've been infected by malware that "hides everything", don't forget to unhide the folders under c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution\
open an administrative level command prompt and type this:
cd \windows\SoftwareDistribution
attrib -r -s -h /s /d *.*

if you want to open the firehose (somewhat) safely, you might try this from c:\windows:
attrib -r -h /s /d *.*

You won't be able to unhide system files, but you will unhide everything that you otherwise have access to.

(Be very certain you're in the SoftwareDistribution folder prior to runnning the attrib command line, otherwise you just unhid/unreadonly/unsystem the entire folder you're in.)

This should quickly fix the WindowsUpdate_80070005 error and allow you to download Windows Updates as well as Microsoft Security Essentials updates if you're encountering 0x80070005 error.

There's no warranty about whether you try this stuff. It may make things work, but you should at least consider whether you're comfortable with this.

Can't send ctrl-alt-del via UVNC UltraVNC

well, it's not fun from the viewer, but let's say you've installed UltraVNC and rebooted the remote computer. Now you can't send Ctrl-Alt-Del to log in.

On screen keyboard can help for Windows 7 and (I think? Vista). You know that button in the bottom left? Turn on the on screen keyboard. Press the ctrl key, then the alt key, then the del key and you're in.

Captive portal follows you home

had an issue with a client where the hotel's captive portal followed him home with IE9. flushdns didn't work, neither cache and cookie delete. This was specifically an issue with onsite local connections, so I added the IP address to "local sites" in IE and it seemed to have resolved.

Can't install Silverlight because it can't find installer

WARNING: Messing with registry entries can be dangerous. Anything you do with it is YOUR problem, not mine. Be sure to back up things before you delete things. I don't know if this will break things. All I know is that it allowed installation after it was removed.

1612 error for Silverlight 3.0

(you might want to remove the Silverlight 3.0 directory from Program Files first).

Go to regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\D7314F9862C648A4DB8BE2A5B47BE100]
(you might want to back up this registry entry before you continue)

delete this entry.
Now you can install 4.0 without error.

Change the icon for PcHelpWare, et al

Looking to customize PCHelpWare for yourself?

There's documentation online, but the change of icon doesn't exactly work in Vista/Windows 7. There's a program that can help, though: IcoFX. Just grab PcHelpWare.sfx, and briefly change it to PcHelpWare.exe, then in IcoFX, go to Tools, Resource Editor, and open the newly named PcHelpWare.exe (open folder icon). Highlight the yellow Uvnc icon, then click the Change icon button and point it to the icon of choice. Click save, then close. Rename the PcHelpWare.exe to PcHelpWare.sfx and now your PcHelpWare app will be branded with your new icon.

tdsskiller Is your website browsing hijacked/redirected?

short answer: tdsskiller You've tried Malwarebytes, and your antivirus and it says you're clean, but it's obvious you're not, as every time you try to use windows update or try to go to a Microsoft site, you get redirected to another search engine.

779 error installing KB957324

Repeated problems failing update of KB957324. Downloaded the Microsoft stand-alone installed, failed because: can't change or read c:\windows\system32\mapisvc.inf. Edited the permissions to take ownership of this file by the current admin logged in user. Retried. Successfully completed. Verified that SYSTEM still had full rights to the file. Happy camper.

Got my 3D back on my Gateway

If you're in Ubuntu, and upgrade from Intrepid to Lucid, you might find this problem that I had: No 3D Effects with Intel 945 graphics. Apparently, that's because Lucid thoughtfully installs nvidia drivers, which, until removed, usurp 3D capabilities of other processors, such as Intel's. I removed a few things labelled nvidia and got 3d working again. Yay!

Replace Dansguardian 2.8.0.6 binary for SmoothWall Express 3

To fix the iTunes 9.1/dansguardian bug (at your own risk, though I don't think it should break anything. If it does, you have the dansguardian backup file, right?):

Assuming you have already installed http://smoothwallmods.googlecode.com/files/DGAV-SW3-2.8.0.6-6.4.4.2-i686-b012.tgz in SmoothWall Express 3.0
  1. Back up /usr/sbin/dansguardian
  2. obtain http://www.gwy.org/dansguardian
  3. replace /usr/sbin/dansguardian
  4. chmod +x /usr/sbin/dansguardian
  5. at the minimum, you could dansguardian -q; dansguardian
now the malformed URL issue won't show up and iTunes 9.1 will work with dansguardian 2.8.0.6.

If you want 2.10, you'll have to compile it yourself.

AVG Update "General Error"

Recently, AVG caused a bit of a hassle with update. It wouldn't. The update indicated both Application updates and virus definition updates.

There's no real easy solution to this, but here's what worked for me:
Update from directory.

  1. Get the application update from http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-update (the first Windows link that indicates "All Necessary Modules") and remember where it is!
  2. Open AVG Anti-Virus console, Tools, Update from Directory
  3. Point it to the download folder from the first step. I told you to remember it! :)

You should now be able to successfully update AVG without having to reinstall.

Move an inaccessible window

Do you have a window that the title bar has moved off the screen and you can't reach it with your mouse?

Do this:
Right-click the taskbar icon for that app and choose Move, then press the Down Arrow Key just once. Your mouse now has control of the window. Use it to move the window where you want.

(if Move isn't available, choose Restore. If Restore isn't available, you might have your icons "stacked", so choose one from the stack.)

Short short: RunOnce was removed in the registry as a key.

assp is good, but ...

I use the Anti Spam SMTP Proxy: http://assp.sourceforge.net/
and I was encountering spam coming in that mailed to postmaster and whomever else was also in "To:".

It turned out that in "Recipients", I had Skip Spam Checks for Postmaster Catchall (sendAllPostmasterNP) -- and abuse checked, which basically precluded the check for "but not if other people are also in 'To:'".

After unchecking this, (and sendAllAbuseNP), the spam dropped.
